The Progressive Film Series continues with an evening program centered around the film When I Came Home, winner of the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival Documentary Feature Award.  "Fiercely moving" (NY Magazine), the film looks at the challenges faced by returning combat veterans and the battle many must fight for the benefits promised to them.  When I Came Home reveals a failing system in New York and Washington, and a veteran's struggle to survive after returning from the war.

When I Came Home will be introduced by its director, Dan Lohaus.  The speakers following the film include Vietnam war veteran Jim Murphy and NY State Assemblyman Adam Bradley.

“Iraq War Veterans:  The Untold Story” is part of a continuing series of films and discussions dealing with urgent issues facing society today.  A $5 donation is suggested to defray costs.

NY Screening of "Iraq for Sale" Raises $7,000 for Congressional Candidate

The Hudson Valley Progressive Democrats hosted two showings of "Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers", during the week when the film's producer teamed with PDA and others to coordinate screenings across the country. Having secured meeting rooms in public libraries, this southern New York PDA chapter saw nearly 180 people turn out for two showings of the newly released Robert Greenwald documentary.

While discussion followed each screening, Friday night's presentation included congressional candidate John Hall, Democratic challenger for the House seat in New York's 19th Congressional District. Neal Hundt, chapter leader, introduced Mr. Hall following the film's call to action to take back the House, and made the connection between the lack of Congressional oversight of war profiteers and the voting record of incumbent Republican Representative Sue Kelly. Her pro-war voting record includes a "yes" vote to suppress investigation of Halliburton no-bid contracts.

Having endorsed Mr. Hall during the primary season, the Hudson Valley chapter used "Iraq for Sale" as a fundraising opportunity for the John Hall for Congress campaign. Besides the drawing power of the film and Mr. Hall, the chapter invited noted media critic and PDA advisory board member Jeff Cohen to open the evening. Mr. Cohen spoke about his experience as a network commentator and television news producer, the subject of his new book, "Cable News Confidential: My Misadventures in Corporate  Media". Later in the evening Mr. Cohen held a book signing, then donated a portion of the proceeds to Mr. Hall's run for Congress.

The success of the evening was measured by the size of the audience (120) and the donations collected for Mr. Hall (over $7,000). Such results demonstrate the power of what committed citizens can do: We could get the community out on a Friday night (& Thursday night, too,) to learn about and discuss topics of great concern; we can attract interesting speakers with timely information to share; and we can help set our country back on track and in a new direction... and help progressive candidate John Hall get elected to take back the House.

The 19th Congressional District chapter, which has just renamed itself the Hudson Valley Progressive Democrats, next projects will be public showings of activist films "The Ground Truth" and "American Blackout".  For more information on these film screenings or to join the chapter, click here.
